Humans are independent actors (whether they are rational or irrational is a different story) and have free will (maybe). But every action has an equal and opposite reaction.1

Or, said a different way:

You are free to do whatever you want. You need only face the consequences.

This is built out a little bit more in this excerpt from Skin in the Game (I haven’t read it):

More people determine the fates of others without having to pay the consequences. Skin in the game means you own your own risk. It means people who make decisions in any walk of life should never be insulated from the consequences of those decisions, period. If you’re a helicopter repairman, you should be a helicopter rider.
